I began hand painting stones as a pastime for relaxation purposes. It soon turned into an activity which now consumes a lot of my time! I adore painting stones and the fact that each and every stone is an original/one off makes each stone very special to me.
I spend many hours, and sometimes days, on a single stone, from preparation, right through to varnishing. I use acrylic paint and more often than not, a soft sheen matt varnish. Each stone is finally given at least four coats of varnish for added protection.
My stones vary in size from tiny little stones no bigger than a large pebble, right up to the heavier stones that can weigh up to a kilo! But mostly they range from between 2cm to 15cm long, depending on shape.
They are perfect little things that can be used simply as an ornament for display, or perhaps a little pocket icon, or even an unusual gift. I think they look pretty good displayed in a wicker basket or a flat glass or ceramic dish on the coffee table.
